Great Words of Wisdom from a fellow Mom!

I read this article today by a mom whose kids are grown and had to post it. I am all too guilty of getting caught up in the everday hustle and bustle of life, of counting the hours until naptime so I can take a break, of wishing Holden were older and able to communicate verbally with me, watch cartoons so I can sleep in, quit drooling like a Saint Bernard, and not want me to hold him every second. Then I take a look at him running across the lawn and it takes my breathe away at how much less he looks like a baby every day, and how quickly the time is really going when I'm busy making other plans. Tonight I held him a little longer as he sipped his milk and watched the Wiggles, I danced with him even though every bone in my body ached, and I lingered over his crib, rocking him and taking in the sweet scent of his baby shampoo before I tucked him in. Every moment counts, for all too soon they will be but a memory and he won't think I'm the coolest person in on the planet. =o)

By Anna Quindlen, Newsweek Columnist and Author

All my babies are gone now. I say this not in sorrow but in disbelief.I take great satisfaction in what I have today: three almost-adults, two taller than I am, one closing in fast. Three people who read the same books I do and have learned not to be afraid of disagreeing with me in their opinion of them, who sometimes tell vulgar jokes that make me laugh until I choke and cry, who need razor blades and shower gel and privacy, who want to keep their doors closed more than I like. Who, miraculously, go to the bathroom, zip up their jackets and move food from plate to mouth all by themselves. Like the trick soap I bought for the bathroom with a rubber ducky at its center, the baby is buried deep within each, barely discernible except through the unreliable haze of the past.
Everything in all the books I once poured over is finished for me now. Penelope Leach., T. Berry Brazelton., Dr. Spock. The ones on sibling rivalry and sleeping through the night and early-childhood education, all grown obsolete. Along with Goodnight Moon and Where the Wild Things Are, they are battered, spotted, well used. But I suspect that if you flipped the pages dust would rise like memories. What those books taught me, finally, and what the women on the playground taught me, and the well-meaning relations --what they taught me, was that they couldn't really teach me very much at all. Raising children is presented at first as a true-false test, then becomes multiple choice, until finally, far along, you realize that it is an endless essay. No one knows anything. One child responds well to positive reinforcement, another can be managed only with a stern voice and a timeout. One child is toilet trained at 3, his sibling at 2. When my first child was born, parents were told to put baby to bed on his belly so that he would not choke on his own spit-up. By the time my last arrived, babies were put down on their backs because of research on sudden infant death syndrome. To a new parent this ever-shifting certainty is terrifying, and then soothing. Eventually you must learn to trust yourself. Eventually the research will follow.
I remember 15 years ago poring over one of Dr. Brazelton's wonderful books on child development, in which he describes three different sorts of infants: average, quiet, and active. I was looking for a sub-quiet codicil for an 18-month old who did not walk. Was there something wrong with his fat little legs? Was there something wrong with his tiny little mind? Was he developmentally delayed, physically challenged? Was I insane? Last year he went to China. Next year he goes to college. He can talk just fine. He can walk, too.
Every part of raising children is humbling, too.Believe me, mistakes were made. They have all been enshrined in the, "Remember-When-Mom-Did Hall of Fame." The outbursts, the temper tantrums, the bad language, mine, not theirs. The times the baby fell off the bed. The times I arrived late for preschool pickup. The nightmare sleepover. The horrible summer camp. The day when the youngest came barreling out of the classroom with a 98 on her geography test, and I responded, "What did you get wrong?". (She insisted I include that.) The time I ordered food at the McDonald's drive-through speaker and then drove away without picking it up from the window. (They all insisted I include that.) I did not allow them to watch the Simpsons for the first two seasons. What was I thinking?
But the biggest mistake I made is the one that most of us make while doing this. I did not live in the moment enough. This is particularly clear now that the moment is gone, captured only in photographs. There is one picture of the three of them, sitting in the grass on a quilt in the shadow of the swing set on a summer day, ages 6, 4 and 1. And I wish I could remember what we ate, and what we talked about, and how they sounded, and how they looked when they slept that night. I wish I had not been in such a hurry to get on to the next thing: dinner, bath, book, bed.I wish I had treasured the doing a little more and the getting it done a little less. Even today I'm not sure what worked and what didn't, what was me and what was simply life. When they were very small, I suppose I thought someday they would become who they were because of what I'd done. Now I suspect they simply grew into their true selves because they demanded in a thousand ways that I back off and let them be. The books said to be relaxed and I was often tense, matter-of-fact and I was sometimes over the top.And look how it all turned out. I wound up with the three people I like best in the world who have done more than anyone to excavate my essential humanity. That's what the books never told me. I was bound and determined to learn from the experts. It just took me a while to figure out who the experts were.

Rainy Day Fun At Chuck E. Cheese!

We recently took Holden to Chuck E. Cheese on a rainy day when he was tired of all his indoor toys and we were tired of the whining. =o) For those of you with little kids, it is cheap entertainment as it is free to get in, and he would have been perfectly happy playing in the big climbing tunnels, which also are free. Of course Daddy was with us and HE wanted tokens to play all the fun games, so it didn't end up being so cheap. Then we got a pizza....and drinks...oh well, we all had a good time! I can remember loving Chuck E. Cheese as a kid and even though frankly the place gives me a headache nowadays, it was neat to see Holden enjoying it. I do have to say that next time I am making Daddy take him in the tunnels; I got so claustrophobic and then we couldn't find our way out! As I was about to hyperventilate a tiny little girl was kind enough to show us the exit route. The yellow car in the top picture is way up high at the end of one of the tunnels. Holden loved it because it had a gas pedal you could push that made noise. The whole car shook and I have to admit, I regretted those extra pieces of pizza I'd snagged as I wondered how many pounds the thing was supposed to hold!!! And for those of you wondering, no, Holden didn't eat any of the pizza he's looking at in the bottom right picture. He touched it, smelled it, licked it, then ate crackers. My son, the bird!

Cardinals love!

These are a few more pics from Father's Day that I hadn't posted yet. We had such a busy day that day (dedication, visit with my side of the family in River Forest) but I didn't want to overlook these moments with Daddy and Daddy's Daddy! Anyone who knows Jay knows he is a DIE HARD St. Louis Cardinals fan. The moment we found out we were expecting a little one, he started accumluating Cardinals items for "Baby Hobson." Never mind if the baby was a boy or a girl, he was going to ensure that they were "raised right!" as he calls it. Of course that means steeped in Cardinals memoribilia and traditions! We agreed that if the baby was a boy, we would have a Cardinals nursery, and Jay got his wish! Down to the crib mobile with spinning Cardinal birds and baseballs, it would make St. Louis proud! Further cementing his glee was the fact that the year I was pregnant, the Cardinals won the World Series! He said Holden was their good luck charm. Anyway, here are some shots of him opening his card from Holden, and them goofing around in their matching hats. They already had these, but bought Jay's Dad, Holden's "Pepaw" one for Father's Day so that all three could match. Let the games begin! (And can the Cubbies start losing a few, please??) =o)

Three generations: Pepaw, Holden, and Daddy. "Go Cards!"

Holden's first "photo shoot!"

Hi everyone! No pics this afternoon, just wanted to tell you to check out this website: http://www.summerknoblochphotography.com/blog/ . We met with Summer at a local park on Tuesday to have her photograph Holden and our family. She does AMAZING work and I was so excited to book her! She went ahead and posted a "sneak peek" on her blog to tide us over while we wait for the rest to be completed in a few weeks. They are beautiful! It amazes me how she is so aptly able to capture her little subjects' spirits. My favorite so far is the one in his white shirt holding our hands. His brown eyes are sparkling and I LOVE the fact that he has dirt on his mouth! Check them out! (Thank you, Summer!)

Because Holden does not have enough toys...

Today we got Holden this neat Clubhouse made by Step 2 that we've had our eye on at Sam's Club. It is the perfect size for him and every time we'd pass it in the store he'd point and grin and want to see it. He is such an outdoors boy and we thought it would be something fun for his friends to enjoy with him. Here are some cute pics. I got this afternoon and evening. As you can see, we've already had quite a few friends over to try it out!

The Clubhouse has a toy phone in it with a little phone jack.
Holden loves pretending to talk on it!
Playing with his stools.

Hello! Anybody out there?

Hmm...what's in here?

A rear view of the Clubhouse...and a rear view of Holden! =o)

Jay modeling the front.
Holden just adores our neighbor, Hannah.
She was cracking me up today, pretending he was a "rock star" and
that she was his manager. Here she is fielding a call to him!

Two blondies!

I spy with my little eye...

Holden's neighbor buddy, Brady, is 3 months older and loves to give hugs. So cute!
(yes, just 3 months...can you tell Brady actually eats his food as opposed to Holden?)

Look at me, Daddy!

Welcome to my new house, Grammy and Papa!

Hangin' out with Colin!

Some baby time with Cade in the grass.
Holden has just learned to feed himself Flavor Ice popsicles and thinks he's hot stuff!
(Cade is only 7 months, Holden is 15 months tomorrow...again, Cade likes to eat his food!)

Hi, Cade! Watcha doin?

"Ooh, this is cold!" (I love Cade's puzzled look!)

I am posting a video clip of Holden "talking" on his phone tonight. He was cracking us up! He just had a regular conversation going. I love my Dad's commentary in the background...you have to know his sense of humor.. the "Billy Bob" comments are classic Jim Bourke.

Cookie thief!

I made some chocolate chip cookies and put them on the counter to cool...

Apparently Holden can now reach the counter tops if he's on his tippy toes!
(Note he has one in the mouth, one in the hand, and I caught him as he was
reaching for one for the right hand!)

"Mmm, those sure were good!
Think I'll try to head back out there to get some more!"

"Cookies? What cookies? What makes you think I ate any??"
(I find his t-shirt very appropriate for today!)

One more good ol' CAT shot! =o)

Meant to post this group shot at Eric's desk with the others. Clockwise from left: Eric, me, Mom, Uncle Joe, Uncle Paul, and Dad with his hard hat. =o) We had a fun day together!

Caterpillar's 50th anniversary!

Yesterday Mom, Dad, and I met my brother, Eric, and three of my Dad's brothers for Caterpillar's 50th anniversary party. Eric works at Cat as a mechanical engineer. He is responsible for the design and installation of a specific part for the loader trucks. He has his own office but also goes out onto the floor to supervise the workers and to help troubleshoot. Cat throws quite the party; outside on the facility grounds there were all types of inflatables for children to play on, race cars, diesel engines, loaders, diggers, etc. that people could tour and climb on, balloonists, a hot air balloon with a raffle for a free flight, free giveaways such as ball caps, little work helmets for kids, magnets, etc. and all the free food and drinks you could handle! Holden would have loved it, but since it was in Aurora it would have been a long day for him. I decided to wait until next year to bring him along so that I could enjoy the day. (I was happy with my decision after viewing several Holden-esque meltdowns thrown by various toddlers passing us by!) Eric took us on a big tour of the building he works in and also the one next to it, so we could see the finished product. The piece that he is responsible for goes on the loaders and prevents them from having roll-over accidents. He was showing us the margin of error and it is only 4 millimeters, so it is a very important piece to get done accurately! Eric was a great tour guide and it was obvious that this is his niche. It was very interesting to see everything and how it works, and now I can picture him at work each day. I am proud of you, Eric!

Uncle Dave, Uncle Paul, Uncle Joe, Eric, Mom and Dad posing in front of the big diesel engine.

Uncle Joe and I switched places! =o)

Eric posing by a truck, Mom pretending to direct him at his desk, My little brother and me in the factory, and Dad and Eric in front of the Cat tower.

Posted by PicasaEric at his desk, giving us the grand tour, Dad posing by a partially finished loader, and the group outside by one of the race cars.

"Dig" our family shot?

One more family shot! Here we are in one of the huge trucks. It felt a little like "Honey I Shrunk the Kids! =o)

Holden loves baby Natalie!

One of my best friends, Bridget, had a baby girl in April. Holden is so excited to have a playmate and can't wait for her to get bigger so they can run around together! Right now he is pretty interested in her carrier seat, (I've had to prevent brain damage more than once since he likes to rock it ...with her in it ... HARD and FAST!) =o) and her diaper bag (Bridget has found "treasures" that he puts in there for her!) I have been meaning to post some pics of them together and then the girls came over for a visit the other day and Bridget had him grinning while they both sat on the couch, Natalie stylin' in her adorable pink sundress. Sooo cute! Those are at the end of the post. Bridget and I have been friends since Jr. High days and it is awesome to be able to have our babies grow up together. We are already discussing an arranged marriage someday! Hee hee!

Holden gets his first peek at Natalie!

He likes what he sees...look at that grin! She is just hangin' out, lookin' pretty!

Baby swap! Holden loves his "Aunt Bridgie"
but wasn't so sure about Mommy holding another baby!

I love this shot of Bridget and the babies in the hammock. So sweet!
We didn't plan the matching turqoise outfits, either.

Visiting Miss Natalie at her house. Holden is playing "hard to get"
by pretending to be more interested in his drink. =o)

Is she ADORABLE or what?
Love the sundress and bloomers, and most of all the smile!

Natalie and her Mommy! Doesn't Bridget look GREAT?
You'd never know she just had a baby. She adores her little girl and is such a good Mama!

Being the wonderful "Aunt" that I am, I introduced Natalie to
Sesame Street! Holden loved the bright colors and sounds when he was her age, too. She watched it for 20 minutes, happy as could be. Bridget had DVR-ing it at the top of her "to do list" when she got home. Nothin' like a little good old-fashioned TV babysitting! =o)

I love, love, love this picture! Don't they look like they're holding hands? I can't get over how big my little peanut looks next to her. I have a feeling she may eventually pass him up.
Look at those chubby cheeks! They are so sweet together.

I like this one too because they are both smiley.

WE LOVE YOU, NATALIE!

Happy Anniversary to a Great Hubby!

While deleting old drafts today, I inadvertently deleted my anniversary post! =o( Here is an updated version:

Thursday, June 19 marked 4 years of marriage for Jay and me. I can remember that day like it was yesterday. (And fitting into that dress....sadly that is not the case now!) =o) We celebrated by going to lunch and a movie while Holden's school year sitter, Lori, kept the little guy. We went to Chili's and to see the new Indiana Jones flick. May not sound too romantic, but believe me, being able to leisurely enjoy food and TALK is a rare commodity these days! Then to just be able to SIT in the air conditioned new theater in the nice reclining seats and catch a whole movie without jumping up to fix a spill, prevent an accident, or switch to the Wiggles was fantastic! The movie was okay, a good summer flick and entertaining. Thanks for watching him Lori! (And Kaydee!) =o)

I can honestly say that I love Jay more now than on the day I married him, which I wouldn't have thought possible back then. Our marriage has had its highs and lows like all marriages do, but the highs definitely outweigh the lows and I know he is my partner for life! Happy anniversary, Jay! I love you!

Holden's dedication

On Sunday morning we had Holden dedicated at church. For those of you that don't know, the dedication was an opportunity for us to stand before God and our fellow church members and make a promise to raise Holden in the Christian faith and to teach him about who God is and how he can have a personal relationship with him through His son, Jesus Christ. We hope that as he grows we can instill in him a strong faith and raise him to be a child of God. My parents, Memaw, and Aunt Allie were with us on this special day. Since it was also Father's Day, Jay and Daddy wore matching outfits and Mommy tried to fit in with the color scheme! =o)

My parents, Holden, Jay and me at church.

During the dedication ceremony, Holden was more interested in the electrical cords behind us.

"Why are you all looking at me?"

During the prayer Holden decided to add to it by loudly declaring, "DOH!" over and over. (His version of "No," fortunately the pastor thought it was funny!)

On the way to Aunt Mary's, "reading" the new Children's Bible Grammy and Papa got him. He loves the bright pictures!

"I like this book!" I know down the road he will know many of the stories by heart. I can't wait!
